Total Hip Resurfacing

Overview

This surgery replaces diseased and damaged portions of the hip with implants designed to restore function to the hip joint.

Damaged Bone Removed

After the femur is separated from the hip socket, the damaged area is removed. The ball is reshaped to fit the femur implant.

Socket Cleaned

Damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the hip socket.

Metal Shell Implanted

A metal shell is pressed into the socket of the hip bone. The shell may be held in with bone cement, or screws may be added.

Ball Component Attached

A metal ball component is attached to the reshaped femur.

End of Procedure

The new ball and socket components are joined to form the new hip joint.
